Diff Before and After App: A Local Photo Journal Alternative

Choose Diff for an animated video made from two photos; choose Progress Photo: Before After on Android when you want to keep adding dated photos to a local journal. Progress can compare two entries and save a still image, but it does not export the moving comparison slider as a video. That difference matters more than whether both apps show before and after photos.

What Diff offers for a finished video

Diff’s Google Play listing describes selecting two library photos, adjusting their positions, choosing an output size, and setting animation duration and repeats. It also lists music, video saving, and a project history. Those controls make it a reasonable choice when your starting point is an existing pair and your deliverable is a short animated reveal. A project history should not, by itself, be taken as confirmation of a dated journal with capture reminders; check those needs separately. Progress Photo: Before After is not affiliated with Diff.

When a local journal is the useful alternative

Progress organizes photos into named projects with dated timelines. You can return to a project, add another photo, and compare entries from different points in the series. Its camera can show the first or latest photo as a translucent reference, and optional reminders follow each project’s photo frequency. This fits an unfinished renovation or another subject you expect to revisit. You are choosing a place to keep the developing record, rather than choosing an animation for an already completed pair. The journal does not require an account or provide automatic cloud sync.

Decide which kind of file you need

A comparison image, an animated reveal, and a timelapse serve different purposes. In Progress, Save as image produces a JPEG of your selected comparison, with date and day labels. The separate Timelapse Studio plays a project’s photos in sequence, with speed, transition, and format controls. It does not animate the comparison divider, and there is no music control. If a moving reveal with a soundtrack is a requirement, those are meaningful reasons to keep using Diff. If someone only needs to inspect two dated images together, a still comparison may be sufficient.

Start with your original photos

To try Progress with an existing pair, create a project and import the two original images. Check their dates before judging the timeline: the app looks for a JPEG capture date, then falls back to the file’s modified date when needed. You can correct a photo’s date in its viewer. Import creates a resized JPEG copy, so keep your originals separately if full resolution or the original file format matters. A finished comparison video is not a substitute for those source images. Do not delete an older collection just because its exported clip plays correctly.

What Progress includes for free

The free version includes photo import, the reference camera, comparisons, reminders, and ZIP backup, with up to two active projects. Comparison images carry a watermark. Free timelapses use up to ten photos; longer projects contribute their first five and last five, with 720p output and a watermark. Premium is an optional subscription that adds unlimited active projects, every photo in the timelapse, 1080p output, and watermark removal from images and videos. Check the app’s Google Play purchase screen for the current price and available terms. You do not need Premium just to compare a pair.

Check the export terms before committing

Diff’s Google Play listing identifies in-app purchases and describes monthly and annual subscriptions. It does not clearly establish the complete free export allowance or exactly which output restrictions apply without a subscription. Check those details in the app and review the current store price before paying. For either app, try the output you actually need with a non-sensitive sample pair first. Open the saved file outside the app and check the framing, labels, watermark, and playback where relevant. A preview alone does not settle whether the exported result meets your needs.

Local storage means keeping your own backup

Progress stores the journal on your device and offers a ZIP backup you choose where to keep. Account sign-in will not recover a lost journal on another phone. Save a separate backup and retain your original images before changing devices or deleting a project. Two limitations deserve attention: a project deletion can remove photos even if the app then reports a save error, and a restore completion count can include an unreadable image. After restoring, open the photos themselves before relying on the result. Keep the previous copy until you have checked the recovered collection.

Other limits that affect the journal choice

Progress does not offer manual crop, rotation, or repositioning controls for imported photos. Its camera reference helps you frame a new shot; it does not automatically repair mismatched older images. Prepare copies in a separate editor if those adjustments are necessary. There are also journal limitations: very long project notes can be shortened when the app reopens, so keep detailed records elsewhere, and the large project header can remain gray even when timeline photos are present. A blank header alone does not establish that the photos are missing; check the timeline. These limits matter if you expect a polished archive as well as comparisons.

Choose around your next task

For a completed room makeover with two source photos and a planned animated post, start by checking Diff’s export terms. For a room you are still renovating, try one Progress project with your existing shots and decide whether dated entries and reminders are useful enough to maintain. You can also keep a journal and use a separate editor for the final presentation. Before moving a whole collection, complete one small cycle: import, correct dates, save a comparison, back up, and check the saved files. That gives you a concrete basis for choosing.

Frequently asked questions

Can Progress replace Diff for a sliding comparison video?

No. You can move a slider while comparing photos in Progress, but its comparison export is a still JPEG. Its timelapse tool creates a sequence of photos instead.

Is Diff still listed for Android?

Yes. Its Google Play page was accessible with an Install option on November 5, 2026. Availability for your particular device or region still needs checking in Google Play.

Can I compare only two photos in Progress?

Yes. Two photos in the same project are enough to open the comparison screen. You can select Slider, Side by side, or Fade and save the result as an image.

Does Progress guarantee MP4 video export?

No. Timelapse export uses MP4 when supported and can fall back to WebM. Check the actual saved format and whether it plays in your intended destination.

Will imported photos always have the right date?

No. A missing capture date can cause the app to use the file’s modified date. Review imported entries and correct dates before relying on the order or day labels.

Do I have to choose one app for everything?

No. Keeping source photos, maintaining a journal, and making a final animated presentation are separate tasks. Choose a tool for each task only when its output or organization is useful to you.

Line it up with PROGRESS. A ghost of your previous photo appears on screen, so every new shot lines up perfectly. Your photos never leave your device.
