Best Progress Photo Apps: What to Compare
The best progress photo app for you is one that protects your photos, supports your project and exports the result you need within limits you can accept. For a free option, check the saved file before committing: free installation does not tell you whether export is included. This comparison covers four Android apps with Google Play listings. Progress is not affiliated with the other apps named here.
Start with the job you need to finish
Decide whether you need a continuing photo journal, fitness records alongside photos, or a short animation from two existing pictures. Then choose your nonnegotiable requirement: an app lock, help matching a pose, a usable free export or a backup you can keep. Use the table to narrow your choices by those needs. Its feature descriptions identify advertised tools; they do not mean every tool is included free. These are options for different jobs, with no overall ranking.
What the free version of Progress includes
Progress Photo: Before After includes the ghost camera, photo import, comparisons, reminders and ZIP backup without a subscription. You can keep two active projects. Free timelapse exports use all photos when the series has ten or fewer; longer series use the first five and last five. Video is 720p, and exported comparisons and videos carry a watermark. The ten-frame restriction applies to the video, not the number of photos you can store in a project. Optional Premium adds unlimited active projects, every photo in the timelapse, 1080p video and watermark removal. Check Google Play for current local pricing and subscription terms.
Compare the free limits before choosing
Photo Progress: Before - After and Fitness Camera: Progress Photo are free to download with in-app purchases, but their public Google Play descriptions do not specify a complete set of free project, photo and export limits. Check those limits and whether a purchase renews before paying. Diff before after video photo describes monthly and annual subscriptions, without a complete free-export allowance. Do not treat an old review as today's plan description. For any contender, check project count, video frame count, resolution, watermark, advertising requirements and whether saving the finished file requires payment. Consult its store and purchase screen for current prices.
Compare privacy controls separately
Local storage, an app lock and data collection answer different questions. Progress stores its photo journal on your device without an account or in-app cloud sync, but it has no separate PIN or biometric lock; use your phone's screen lock. Photo Progress advertises password and biometric unlocking, while Fitness Camera advertises an optional PIN or fingerprint lock. For data collection, read the Google Play Data safety section and the developer's privacy policy separately from those lock features. Photo Progress declares no collection or third-party sharing; Fitness Camera and Diff disclose collection and sharing categories. Those are developer disclosures, not independent guarantees. Also consider who can access files after you export or back them up.
Check the exported file, not just the preview
Choose the output before comparing editing features. Progress saves comparison images as JPEGs and photo sequences as timelapse videos. Its video can be MP4 or WebM depending on device support, so check playback in the app where you plan to use it. Diff focuses on animated videos from two photos, with music, duration and repeat controls. That is a useful distinction if your goal is a finished two-photo animation: Progress does not export its interactive comparison slider as a moving wipe or add music. Save a sample file and inspect its framing, labels, watermark and playback before moving a long series.
Make recovery part of the comparison
An exported collage or video is not a backup of your journal. Progress offers a manual ZIP containing projects and photos; keep a copy somewhere you control outside the phone. It does not provide automatic cloud recovery. There is a recovery limitation: an unreadable photo can be included in the restored count, so a success message alone does not establish that every picture opens. Open restored photos before discarding originals. Back up before deleting a project, too; if deletion reports a save error, do not assume its photos remain. Fitness Camera advertises journal backup and restore, while Photo Progress advertises image export for backup; check what each actually preserves.
Where Progress falls short
Progress suits a photo journal with manual framing and image or timelapse output. Its ghost overlay helps you line up a new shot, but it does not detect a matching pose or automatically reposition imported photos. Fitness Camera advertises a shutter triggered by pose matching, plus measurement charts and Health Connect integration. Consider it if those are requirements. Photo Progress advertises zoom when comparing two images, which Progress does not offer. Progress also has no weight or body-measurement tracking. Its subscription upgrades output and capacity; it does not add these missing tools.
Try the whole workflow with ordinary photos
Before importing personal pictures, use a few ordinary test images. Create a project, import them, close and reopen the app, compare two shots and save the format you need. Open that file outside the app. Then make a backup and check the recovery process without deleting your originals. For Progress, a series longer than ten photos also lets you see whether the free timelapse selection suits your purpose. Choose after checking the saved result and recovery options, rather than stopping at a preview or subscription screen.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best free progress photo app?
Choose by the limit you can live with. Progress is an option for two active projects and watermarked output, including capped 720p timelapses. If you need watermark-free output or every frame from a longer series for free, verify another app's export terms before choosing.
Is a free trial the same as a free version?
No. Compare what remains available without starting a paid plan. Before accepting a trial, read the purchase screen for renewal terms and cancellation instructions; a free download alone does not establish ongoing free access to the tools you need.
Can I use this comparison to choose an iPhone app?
The platform and feature details here cover Android listings. Check the exact app's App Store listing separately for iPhone availability, purchases and limits. Do not assume a similarly named app is the same product or has the same plan.
Can I edit imported photos to align them in Progress?
Progress does not offer manual repositioning or rotation of imported photos. If that is essential, check a contender's editing tools using sample images. Keep your original files so you can try another workflow without losing them.
Can a progress photo app assess a health change?
Do not use a photo comparison as a medical assessment. Progress is a photo journal and does not diagnose conditions or provide treatment advice. Ask a qualified clinician about symptoms, recovery or other health concerns.
Line it up with PROGRESS. A ghost of your previous photo appears on screen, so every new shot lines up perfectly. Your photos never leave your device.
